For the Wurundjeri, Boonwurrung, Taungurong, Dja Dja Wurrung and Wathaurung which make up the Kulin Nation, Melbourne has always been an important meeting place and location for events of social, educational, sporting and cultural significance.

Since its European settlement in 1835, different nationalities have migrated to Melbourne at various stages of its history and have contributed significantly to the city's growing identity.

Find out more about Melbourne’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and its multicultural history.

Committee Recommendations

Venue

Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre took home Gold at the 2025 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards for Best Business Event Venue in Australia. It's a title the venue has been working towards since its opening in 1996, one iconic event at a time.

Now it’s ASMIRT’s turn, holding ASMIRT 2027 at MCEC, the first time since CSM 2014. ASMIRT 2027 will be held in the new Goldfields expansion precinct, on the South Wharf side of the MCEC, with the adjoining Novotel and nearby Pan Pacific Hotels less than a minutes’ walk from the conference rooms.

The expansive Goldfields exhibition hall provides a vibrant central hub where delegates can explore industry displays, connect with exhibitors and network with colleagues. Just steps away, the adjacent Goldfields Theatre, the Sovereign room and the Eureka breakout rooms offer the perfect setting for focused workshops, panel discussions and smaller group sessions. This close proximity allows attendees to move effortlessly between the exhibition and learning spaces, creating a dynamic conference environment where discovery, collaboration and conversation continue throughout the day.

MCEC is the first convention centre in the world to achieve a Green Star 6-star rating and also the first convention centre operator in Australia to appoint a permanent external Accessibility Advisory Committee, bringing lived experience directly into how we plan and operate. These credentials shape how every event is delivered.

We continue to reduce emissions, eliminate single-use plastics and strengthen our sourcing practices. Partnerships with OzHarvest and alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals create measurable accountability, not just good intentions.

Accessibility is designed into the experience from arrival through to participation, not managed as an afterthought. The best venue in Australia should work for everyone who attends. We build it that way from the start.

Visa

For overseas registrants intending to attend ASMIRT 2027, you may be required to obtain a visa through the Australian Department of Home Affairs. For all visa applications it is recommended that you lodge your paperwork a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks prior to your intended travel.

If you require a welcome / invitation letter, please contact conferences@asmirt.org. Welcome or Invitation letters will only be issued to those who have registered and completed payment for the event.

Click here to apply for an Australian visa.

🔸 Visa options
Participants, attendees and speakers who will not be working, performing or otherwise be paid to contribute at the event may be eligible to apply for the following visa options:

NB: Eligibility for an eVisitor visa and ETA will be determined by the country of passport that the applicant holds.

Visitor (subclass 600) Business visa applicants should include as much information as possible to support their visa applications. In addition, visa applicants should include the following information:

  • Evidence of any international travel outside of their own country (for example, copies of visas and passport pages containing entry and departure stamps),
  • Information and evidence of attendance at similar events of this type/nature.

Electronic Travel Authority – ETA (subclass 601) applicants from Malaysia should note that there may be additional information and documentary requirements.

🔸 Biometrics
Visa applicants outside of Australia will need to provide biometrics when they apply for a visa that is part of the Australian biometrics program, or where they are from a country, or located in a country at time of application that is part of the Australian biometrics program.

🔸 Health and Character Requirements
Most visa applicants must meet minimum health standards before they can be granted a visa, and the department may assess your health as part of the visa application process. This is referred to as 'meeting the health requirement'.

Applicants must be of good character to obtain a visa for Australia and must meet the character requirements in order to be granted a visa.

🔸 Visa Application Process and Processing Times
Visa applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis, and actual processing times can vary due to individual circumstances including:

  • Whether the applicant has lodged a complete application, including all necessary supporting documents and paid associated visa application charges,
  • How promptly the applicant responds to any requests for additional information,
  • How long it takes to perform required checks on the supporting information provided,
  • How long it takes to receive information from external agencies, particularly in relation to health, character, and national security requirements
  • When the application is lodged taking the current global visa processing times into account.

Processing times are impacted each month by cases that are complex, changes to volume of applications and changes to Ministerial Directions. For this reason, we would advise that visa applications be lodged at least 6 to 8 weeks prior to a person’s intended date of travel.

🔸 Border and Entry Requirements
Travellers should familiarise themselves with Australia’s border and entry requirements.
