Today, Melbourne is one of the great multicultural cities of the world and is a significant meeting place.
For the Wurundjeri, Boonwurrung, Taungurong, Dja Dja Wurrung and Wathaurung which make up the Kulin Nation, Melbourne has always been an important meeting place and location for events of social, educational, sporting and cultural significance.
Since its European settlement in 1835, different nationalities have migrated to Melbourne at various stages of its history and have contributed significantly to the city's growing identity.

Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre took home Gold at the 2025 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards for Best Business Event Venue in Australia. It's a title the venue has been working towards since its opening in 1996, one iconic event at a time.
Now it’s ASMIRT’s turn, holding ASMIRT 2027 at MCEC, the first time since CSM 2014. ASMIRT 2027 will be held in the new Goldfields expansion precinct, on the South Wharf side of the MCEC, with the adjoining Novotel and nearby Pan Pacific Hotels less than a minutes’ walk from the conference rooms.
The expansive Goldfields exhibition hall provides a vibrant central hub where delegates can explore industry displays, connect with exhibitors and network with colleagues. Just steps away, the adjacent Goldfields Theatre, the Sovereign room and the Eureka breakout rooms offer the perfect setting for focused workshops, panel discussions and smaller group sessions. This close proximity allows attendees to move effortlessly between the exhibition and learning spaces, creating a dynamic conference environment where discovery, collaboration and conversation continue throughout the day.
MCEC is the first convention centre in the world to achieve a Green Star 6-star rating and also the first convention centre operator in Australia to appoint a permanent external Accessibility Advisory Committee, bringing lived experience directly into how we plan and operate. These credentials shape how every event is delivered.
We continue to reduce emissions, eliminate single-use plastics and strengthen our sourcing practices. Partnerships with OzHarvest and alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals create measurable accountability, not just good intentions.
Accessibility is designed into the experience from arrival through to participation, not managed as an afterthought. The best venue in Australia should work for everyone who attends. We build it that way from the start.
