Supporting the Student Placement Experience: What to Do When Things Don't Go According to Plan

Synopsis: This interactive session will explore the issues that can arise with medical radiation students on placement, and how to manage these issues. Students are under pressure from many areas these days, including financial pressures, the challenges of neurodiversity, family expectations, living away from home without support, and many others. This workshop will explore how to recognise when students are struggling, and how to support them, without compromising the integrity of their capability development. Evidence-based strategies will be workshopped through table-based discussions, and shared for consideration by the group at large.

Learning outcomes: 

• Support students in difficult situations, and effectively have difficult conversations
• Assess when to involve the University, and when failure of the placement should be considered
• Analysis of student performance utilising professional judgement
• Apply principles of contextual qualitative assessment of student performance
