ASMIRT/NZIMRT 2025 Program

Attendees at ASMIRT/NZIMRT 2025 can look forward to a diverse lineup of speakers covering various scientific and non-scientific topics. The program will include engaging invited speakers, interactive workshops, and social functions for all interests.

Thursday 27 March: Arrive in Adelaide before March 27 to participate in a full day of hands-on, pre-conference interactive workshops. These workshops will run from 9 AM to 5 PM and vary in length, offering options of 1.5 hours, 3 hours, or 6 hours.

Friday 28 – Sunday 30 March: The main conference spans three full days and includes a blend of plenary sessions and up to five concurrent sessions, featuring over 200 educational and technical presentations. On March 28, there will be a Student Conference, organized by students for students, which is a full-day event. Throughout the conference, delegates will have access to a large exhibition space of 2,000 square meters, showcasing over 40 vendors. The program also includes networking opportunities, such as the Friday Welcome Social Event, breakfast sessions and activities on Saturday, and the spectacular Gala Dinner on Saturday night, along with much more.

We are delighted to announce that the draft program for ASMIRT/NZIMRT 2025 in Adelaide is now available! We have up to seven rooms running concurrently through parts of the conference.

INVITED SPEAKERS

Lauren Parsons

Lauren is an award-winning wellbeing specialist, TEDx speaker and author. She is also the founder of the Snack on Exercise movement and host of the Thrive TV Show. Previously a senior lecturer at the New Zealand College of Fitness, a qualified life coach and with a business degree and post-graduate specialising in human resources, Lauren is a sought-after international speaker and consultant who integrates her wellness and business background to help organisations create a high-energy, peak performance team culture.

Craig Rispin CSP

With nearly 40 years of experience in AI and medical practice management, Craig provides valuable insights into how these technologies can revolutionise and transform health care. Craig’s journey with AI began 37 years ago at Apple, where he delivered his first 100 presentations on early voice-to-text technology. Since then, Craig has focussed on applying AI innovations to enhance clinical workflows, improve patient outcomes and expand the boundaries of what’s possible in medical imaging and radiation therapy.

Professor Anita Mahajan

Anita completed her medical school and residency at McGill University in Canada, followed by a fellowship in proton therapy. An expert in treating paediatric cancer and adult patients with central nervous system tumours, she has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and continues to participate in research and new applications of proton therapy. Anita works closely with the team at Mayo Clinic to improve efficiency, throughput, implementation of new technology. She is currently working on the new proton expansion project in Rochester.

Dr Nick Woznitza MBE

Nick is a consultant radiographer and clinical academic, enhancing and expanding the role of radiographers including in radiographer reporting, advanced practice and artificial intelligence. Nick is an accredited consultant practitioner with the College of Radiographers and an Advanced Practitioner with ASMIRT. He was the overall winner at the 2017 Chief Allied Health Professions Officer Awards, and in 2022 was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for services to radiography.

Dr Amy Hancock

Amy is a therapeutic radiographer and a passionate advocate for research that improves the care and services for patients and for patient and public involvement and engagement. Amy was awarded the College of Radiographers Doctoral Fellowship, supporting her PhD, which employed co-production to develop a shared definition of compassion and a conceptual framework of compassionate display. Amy is part of the multidisciplinary research team for TOURIST: a series of randomised controlled trials for palliative radiotherapy for stage IV non-small cell lung cancer.

Professor Suresh de Silva

Suresh is a radiologist and Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists. He has a conjoint lecturer appointment at the University of New South Wales and is committed to clinical and radiological research, having completed a postgraduate degree in clinical trials research at the University of Sydney. In 2010, Suresh co-founded the global charity Radiology Across Borders. He believes good education and infrastructure should be available to all and is committed to seeing this vision come to fruition.

Professor Andrew Kurmis

Andrew’s clinical work involves primary, complex and revision joint replacement surgery, as well as managing major trauma including limb salvage surgery. Andrew holds academic appointments at both Flinders University and the University of Adelaide. He has published nearly 100 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and other scientific works, and has received national and international awards. Having completed a Bachelor of Medical Radiations before his medical and advanced surgical training, he is uniquely positioned to appreciate the critical synergistic value of imaging in surgery.

Daniel Johnstone

After being diagnosed with cancer in 2016, Daniel has dedicated himself to educating healthcare professionals and students through regular presentations, collaboration on pedagogy and facilitating the sharing of cancer stories in the Cancer Voices SA Survivors as Teachers program. He is involved in various cancer advocacy and advisory groups and has served as the Program Coordinator for Camp Quality. Daniel holds a Bachelor of Health Science, a Bachelor of Psychological Science, and a Master of Clinical Chiropractic. He is currently pursuing a PhD.

Angela Walls

Angela is an MRI expert and Fellow of the National Imaging Facility. Her main role is to develop and optimise novel MRI imaging methods, working with both local and international researchers. Angela’s work extends from pre-clinical applications to human development, with a focus on translational research and bringing these outcomes into the clinic. Angela is the ISMRT representative of the International MRI Diffusion study group and Chair of the National Imaging Facility’s research radiographer community of practice.

Andrew Murphy

Andrew is a radiographer at the Queensland Children’s Hospital and the Accreditation Manager and Managing Editor at Radiopaedia.org. An Advanced Practitioner specialising in radiographic image interpretation and an ASMIRT Fellow, Andrew's passions are patient-focussed imaging and creating safe, welcoming environments for vulnerable patients. Andrew has worked in adult and paediatric institutions in Canada and Australia and has published articles on radiographic image interpretation and artificial intelligence. In 2024, he was co-convenor of the Radiopaedia Virtual Conference – the largest dedicated online radiology conference in the world.

ASMIRT Person Centred Care Workshop

This workshop aims to empower participants to share stories of exceptional self-care, peer support, and patient care. It will also include simulated experiences designed to reconnect participants with the vulnerability faced by their patients. Additionally, the concepts of self-care and caring for teammates will be addressed.

  • Enhanced awareness of patient experiences and the challenges they may present.
  • Understanding the importance of self-care and its connection to peer support and patient care.
  • Develop strategies for overcoming barriers to person-centred care.

Building a Learning Culture

Clinical Education, Supervision, and Assessment

Critical Conversations in Medical Imaging

Poor communication compromises healthcare delivery and negatively impacts patient outcomes and teamwork. It is also a significant stressor for healthcare practitioners. This workshop explores patient advocacy within effective communication and the challenges radiographers face in clinical settings. Participants will engage in group discussions and practice the Critical Conversation Framework, designed to empower radiographers in critical conversations.

Learning outcomes:

  • Identify factors that facilitate and hinder effective communication.
  • Distinguish between critical and difficult conversations and understand the role of patient advocacy.
  • Practice strategies for de-escalating conversations and conduct critical discussions in clinical radiography contexts.

I’ve got an idea!  Getting started in research and developing a project protocol

Starting in research can be daunting. This workshop offers practical support for developing research ideas or getting involved in research. It will present strategies to kickstart your research, followed by small group work to refine existing ideas or explore prepared examples.

  • Develop research connections with others in the profession.

Innov-AI-tion: Focus on Practical Applications and Quality of Artificial Intelligence for Radiation Therapists

Musculoskeletal X-ray Image Interpretation

This interactive workshop is for trauma radiographers to enhance image interpretation skills for upper and lower limb x-rays. You’ll practice interpreting anonymised cases, learn to distinguish normal and abnormal findings, and communicate urgent issues. Topics include acute musculoskeletal conditions such as fractures, luxations, soft tissue signs, degenerative joint disease, incidental findings, and infections. Ultimately, this will empower you to “See Something, Say Something,” and accurately document your findings.

Learning outcomes:

  • Critically evaluate image quality and radiographic positioning in conventional appendicular radiographs.
  • Identify and describe normal, variant, and abnormal radiographic appearances, including urgent findings, using a systematic approach.
  • Practice effective communication of urgent findings and correlate imaging results with relevant clinical history to inform clinical decisions.

Orthopaedics for Fourth Generation Radiographers

Pain Science in Radiography Practice: Considerations and Applications for Person-Centred Care
