ASMIRT/NZIMRT 2025 Program

Attendees at ASMIRT/NZIMRT 2025 can look forward to a diverse lineup of speakers covering various scientific and non-scientific topics. The program will include engaging invited speakers, interactive workshops, and social functions for all interests.

Thursday 27 March: Arrive in Adelaide before March 27 to participate in a full day of hands-on, pre-conference interactive workshops. These workshops will run from 9 AM to 5 PM and vary in length, offering options of 1.5 hours or longer.

Friday 28 – Sunday 30 March: The main conference spans three full days and includes a blend of plenary sessions and up to five concurrent sessions, featuring over 200 educational and technical presentations. On March 28, there will be a Student Conference, organized by students for students, which is a full-day event. Throughout the conference, delegates will have access to a large exhibition space of 2,000 square meters, showcasing over 40 vendors. The program also includes networking opportunities, such as the Friday Welcome Social Event, breakfast sessions and activities on Saturday, and the spectacular Gala Dinner on Saturday night, along with much more.

We are delighted to announce that the final program for ASMIRT/NZIMRT 2025 in Adelaide is now available! We have up to seven rooms running concurrently through parts of the conference.

INVITED SPEAKERS

Kelly Trudgen

Kelly is an Aboriginal woman with expertise in critical care nursing practice and leadership. Kelly’s clinical experience comes from both military and civilian nursing, including flight nursing and logistical management for emergency assistance and disaster management. More recently, Kelly has been in strategic policy development roles as Director of Nursing for the Office of First Nations Health with Queensland Health and Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council. Recognising many determinants that influence cancer detection and cancer care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Kelly brings an insight to culturally safe engagement and policy development to inform on best practice and innovative measures to strengthen Cancer Australia’s resolve to improve health outcomes across the cancer continuum.

Adjunct Professor Jacinta Elston

Jacinta is a consultant assisting Cancer Australia’s efforts in strengthening engagement and cancer care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples nationally. An Aboriginal woman from North Queensland and breast cancer survivor of more than 20 years, Jacinta’s former roles include inaugural Pro Vice Chancellor (Indigenous) at Monash University and Professor of Indigenous Health at James Cook University. She was the inaugural Chair of Cancer Australia’s Leadership Group on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Control and has served as a Board Member/Chair of the Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Service, and the North Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Legal Service.

Dr John Pereira

John completed his undergraduate training at the University of New South Wales, followed by postgraduate radiology training at the Prince of Wales and Prince Henry hospitals. John completed his subspecialty Paediatric Imaging Fellowship (Diagnostic and Interventional) at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. After completing his Fellowship, John worked as a consultant at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan (USA), before relocating back to Sydney to become a staff specialist at the Prince of Wales and Sydney Children’s hospitals. John is committed to educating medical students and registrars.

Associate Professor Michael Penniment AM

Michael is a senior radiation oncologist who is involved in Australian and international research projects with a focus on planning and developing new radiation therapy facilities and improving Indigenous cancer care and quality of life during cancer treatment. In 2010, he established Darwin’s Alan Walker Cancer Care Centre. Michael’s clinical experience covers a broad range of solid tumour malignancies with special interest in breast cancer, head and neck cancer, upper gastrointestinal cancer, colorectal cancer and skin cancers.
Michael is a member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists Particle Therapy Group and several other leading cancer trial groups including the American Society of Radiation Oncology, the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology and the Trans-Tasman Oncology Group. He also sits on the Board of the Asia-Oceania Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group.
In January 2021, Michael was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his significant service to medicine, and to radiation oncology.

Cara Miller

Cara was appointed MRPBA Chair in February 2022 and has been a Board Member since 2015. She is a registered diagnostic radiographer and sonographer with over 20 years’ experience. She previously owned a private radiology practice with a successful business model that emphasised patient centric radiology services combined with a focus and investment in staff, equipment and culture. Cara has been recognised across the business industry as a Telstra Business Women’s Finalist, as well as a finalist in the Ernst Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards. 

Lauren Parsons

Lauren is an award-winning wellbeing specialist, TEDx speaker and author. She is also the founder of the Snack on Exercise movement and host of the Thrive TV Show. Previously a senior lecturer at the New Zealand College of Fitness, a qualified life coach and with a business degree and post-graduate specialising in human resources, Lauren is a sought-after international speaker and consultant who integrates her wellness and business background to help organisations create a high-energy, peak performance team culture.

Craig Rispin CSP

With nearly 40 years of experience in AI and medical practice management, Craig provides valuable insights into how these technologies can revolutionise and transform health care. Craig’s journey with AI began 37 years ago at Apple, where he delivered his first 100 presentations on early voice-to-text technology. Since then, Craig has focussed on applying AI innovations to enhance clinical workflows, improve patient outcomes and expand the boundaries of what’s possible in medical imaging and radiation therapy.

Professor Anita Mahajan

Anita completed her medical school and residency at McGill University in Canada, followed by a fellowship in proton therapy. An expert in treating paediatric cancer and adult patients with central nervous system tumours, she has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and continues to participate in research and new applications of proton therapy. Anita works closely with the team at Mayo Clinic to improve efficiency, throughput, implementation of new technology. She is currently working on the new proton expansion project in Rochester.

Dr Nick Woznitza MBE

Nick is a consultant radiographer and clinical academic, enhancing and expanding the role of radiographers including in radiographer reporting, advanced practice and artificial intelligence. Nick is an accredited consultant practitioner with the College of Radiographers and an Advanced Practitioner with ASMIRT. He was the overall winner at the 2017 Chief Allied Health Professions Officer Awards, and in 2022 was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for services to radiography.

Dr Amy Hancock

Amy is a therapeutic radiographer and a passionate advocate for research that improves the care and services for patients and for patient and public involvement and engagement. Amy was awarded the College of Radiographers Doctoral Fellowship, supporting her PhD, which employed co-production to develop a shared definition of compassion and a conceptual framework of compassionate display. Amy is part of the multidisciplinary research team for TOURIST: a series of randomised controlled trials for palliative radiotherapy for stage IV non-small cell lung cancer.

Critical Conversations in Medical Imaging

Poor communication compromises healthcare delivery and negatively impacts patient outcomes and teamwork. It is also a significant stressor for healthcare practitioners. This workshop explores patient advocacy within effective communication and the challenges radiographers face in clinical settings. Participants will engage in group discussions and practice the Critical Conversation Framework, designed to empower radiographers in critical conversations.

Musculoskeletal X-ray Image Interpretation

This interactive workshop is for trauma radiographers to enhance image interpretation skills for upper and lower limb x-rays. You’ll practice interpreting anonymised cases, learn to distinguish normal and abnormal findings, and communicate urgent issues. Topics include acute musculoskeletal conditions such as fractures, luxations, soft tissue signs, degenerative joint disease, incidental findings, and infections. Ultimately, this will empower you to “See Something, Say Something,” and accurately document your findings.

Pain Science in Radiography Practice: Considerations and Applications for Person-Centred Care

Outdated or inaccurate understandings of pain can have significant implications on patient experiences and outcomes. In a recent study, only 12% of Australian radiographers reported recieving pain education in training, and 1 in 5 lack confidence in managing patient pain. This workshop provides education in current pain models and research, and will equip you with practical, biopsychosocially informed strategies you can apply immediately to improve person-centred care and patient pain experiences.
