Pain Science in Radiography Practice: Considerations and Applications for Person-Centred Care

Join us for this interactive workshop exploring pain neurophysiology and clinical applications for radiography practice. Outdated and inaccurate understandings of pain unfortunately remain persistent among healthcare practitioners; a recent survey found only 12% of radiographers reported receiving pain education in their training program, and approximately 1 in 5 do not feel confident managing patient pain clinically. This workshop will provide an overview of current evidence-informed models of pain, draw on fascinating insights from experimental pain research, and equip you with practical strategies that you can implement immediately to optimise the experiences and person-centred care of patients experiencing pain.

Learning outcomes:

  • Recognise why it is important that radiographers have an evidence-informed understanding of pain.
  • Describe the current biopsychosocial model of pain and how it differs from the outdated biomedical models.
  • Analyse the theoretical and practical implications of current models of pain within the radiography context.
  • Apply specific strategies within clinical radiography practice to improve the experiences and care of patients with pain.
