Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is utilised as a diagnostic tool for fracture risk prediction, diagnosis of osteoporosis, and monitoring responses to therapy. However, the quality and consistency of results is operator dependant. Operator expertise and techniques influence results, even just overlooking a ‘minor detail’ can have major consequences by altering scan results and impacting patient management. This presentation will provide an overview of DEXA scanning, the underlying theoretical elements, and highlight areas where errors can occur. Attendees will achieve a comprehensive understanding of bone densitometry and an appreciation of factors and techniques that influence precision and accuracy.
Learning Outcomes:
- Describe requirements for each DEXA examination and body region.
- Analyse aspects where errors can occur.
- Apply workshop content in clinical practice enhancing precision and accuracy.
- To provide an overview and advanced discussion of bone densitometry and DEXA scans.
