Equitable care for all – If we get it right for people with learning disabilities and autism, we get it right for everyone

People with learning disabilities and autism often experience significant health inequalities, including poorer outcomes and negative interactions with healthcare services. This workshop aims to improve care for people with learning disabilities and autism in Australia by improving the education of medical radiation professionals. Addressing key issues such as diagnostic overshadowing, unconscious bias, and the lack of reasonable adjustments. Participants will gain essential knowledge and practical tools to better recognise and respond to the unique needs of these people. By understanding their experiences and challenges, professionals can improve clinical practices, reduce health inequalities, and ensure equitable, high-quality care for all and promote inclusive healthcare education.

Learning outcomes:

  • Enhance the understanding of autism and learning disabilities.
  • Identify and explain key barriers and inequalities faced by people with learning disabilities and autism in the healthcare setting.
  • Demonstrate understanding of reasonable adjustments and their role in ensuring equal communication for all in clinical practice.
  • Apply person-centred approaches for people with learning disabilities and autism by highlighting the need for individualised care – learning disability and autism informed care.
