Clinton Heal, Founder and CEO of melanomaWA
Clinton was diagnosed with advanced melanoma back in 2005 at the age of 22. At the time, he was playing WAFL footy for Peel Thunder and progressing his career as a medical imager. Since his diagnosis, he has had 35 tumours removed and received chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapies. His 10 year-long journey with melanoma could have been avoided if he had noticed the mole that went on to spread cancer through his body.
Clinton has adopted a proactive approach to managing his health and believes that you can live well with melanoma.
In 2008, Clinton founded melanomaWA (www.melanomawa.org.au) to help other people who have been diagnosed with melanoma get immediate access to the information and support they need to improve their prognosis. melanomaWA has since expanded its team and suite of activities to include comprehensive support services, including access from remote communities, and education and increased awareness about melanoma prevention through events and campaigns.
While living with melanoma, Clinton progressed his career as a medical imager. He graduated from Curtin Universtity in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science (Medical Imaging) and got his first job with Global Diagnostics (Imaging the South). It was during this role that he discovered his first melanoma metastases. In 2008, Clinton was made Global Diagnostics Peel Region Manager. Clinton now practices at Oceanic Imaging as a CT Radiographer as part of the PET ‐CT center. Clinton is one of a rare few that has experienced and gained perspective from both the medical AND patient side of medical imaging for cancer detection.
Whilst living with melanoma, Clinton has also been able to complete a Master of Business Administration and in 2010, become a member of the Boards for the WA Melanoma Advisory Service and Australian Melanoma Consumer Alliance. Clinton has received the 2011 WA Young Australian of the Year, 2011 40 under 40 Business Award and the 2014 John Curtin Medal for community work. He has sharpened his key note speaking, presentation and media skills. Clinton is now a doting father, competes in various triathlons and sporting events and is a keen surfer.
Gemma Waters, Radiation Therapist, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, WA
Gemma is a Radiation Therapist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, WA. She holds a Bachelor of Biomedical Science from Deakin University and graduated from RMIT University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Medical Radiations (Radiation Therapy). Gemma has lived and worked in Perth for over 6 years now, with the last 2 and a half years being focussed on Stereotactic Planning and Treatment with the CyberKnife.
Gemma has been involved in the implementation and running of the CyberKnife facility at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. She recently travelled to Europe to undertake CyberKnife Quality Assurance, visiting 3 centres throughout London and Munich.
Julian Harris, Career Development Consultant at Curtain University
Julian Harris is a Career Development Consultant at Curtin University where he works directly with science students in order to assist them with their careers; from deciding where to go with their degrees all the way to assisting with applications including resumes and interview training. He has a previous background within the recruitment industry and qualifications in both psychology and learning and development. He is here today to hopefully assist you with how to market yourselves effectively to employers through your applications and to answer any questions you might have around those processes
James Brown, Development Manager for Work the World Australia
James Brown is the Development Manager for Work the World Australia. He will be outlining the placement opportunities they provide specific to the Medical Imaging field, and will introduce Cameron Read from Curtin University who will also share some insights on his experience in Kathmandu last year.
Work the World are the leading provider of tailored Radiography and Radiotherapy elective placements in Ghana, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Peru and the Philippines. They work with students to design a placement that matches their interests, take away all the hassle of organising it and make sure them feel 100% prepared and supported throughout.
Digital equipment is limited and in some cases non-existent in the developing world. Manual interpretation is often the only way to analyse data, so participants gain invaluable insight into the fundamentals of their discipline. Work the World placements include diagnostic and therapeutic radiography, working with plain film, X-ray, CT, ultrasound, MRI and fluoroscopy. They partner with large regional hospitals, private clinics, teaching hospitals and specific radiography schools. They are also able to offer radiotherapy placements in Peru and Tanzania, working with treatments that include brachytherapy, cobalt therapy, and radiation therapy.
We are excited to release the ASMMIRT 2017 Student Program which features a selection of inspirational invited speakers and several concurrent technical sessions. As well as this the program will include a Student Social function on Friday evening.
Plan for the day
The ASMMIRT 2017 Student Conference will be held on Friday 24 March. Student delegates will begin their day alongside general registrants at the ASMMIRT 2017 Opening Ceremony and Opening Plenary sessions.
After morning tea, the Student Conference will begin with invited speaker Clinton Heal, Founder and CEO of melanomaWA that will engage both medical imaging and radiation therapy students.
For the remainder of the day, concurrent sessions will feature a combination of invited speakers and proffered papers. At the conclusion of the Student Conference, student delegates will gather together for final presentaions on career development and international volunteering opportunities. ASMIRT President Patrick Eastgate will then address the student delegates about their professional Society ASMIRT before concluding the conference.

After the Student Conference on Friday evening and the Exhibition Welcome, students will have a social night. This is the perfect opportunity to mix with fellow student conference attendees as well as attendees from the main ASMMIRT conference. It’s an ideal networking / social opportunity.
